International Colloquium on the recycling CO2

For the Sustainable Development Chair, a series of colloquia on CO2 has been launched. The first one "Large-volume CO2 recycling for Fuels and Materials" will take place on the 27 and 28 September 2010 at CPE Lyon. World experts on the use of CO2 and specialists in renewable energies have been invited to make up the discussion panel for this great scientific encounter. Among the prestigious guests who have already confirmed their participation in this eventare the president of Group of Intergovernmental Expert of Climate (GIEC)Rajendra K. Pachauri and Janos Pasztor of the United Nations.

Yes, you've got there!

Whether you come from special preparatory classes or from a university technology course, or from a university, whether you're a born chemist or a budding electronics engineer through and through, we're very pleased to welcome you in Year 3 at CPE Lyon for this coming academic year.

D-Day is Tuesday 8th September at 8.30 when we will be waiting for you!

Programme:

On 8th September, everyone, - the administrative staff, the Students' Union staff and of course, even our own national brass band! - will be here to welcome you as from the start of the morning!

A welcoming breakfast (offered by the Students' Union) awaits you between 8.30 and 10.00. At 10 o'clock, in the large amphitheatre, Gérard PIGNAULT, the Director of CPE Lyon, will address and welcome you.

After that, what with the administrative procedures, the first contacts with your fellow 'refreshers', and contacts with the 'older' students, it looks like yuor timetable will be quite busy!

The Students'Union Committee has prepared an unforgettable integration programme just for you!

NB: the integration weekend will take place 18, 19 and 20 September.

The 2009 Students' 'Trendency' barometer: CPE Lyon students' level of satisfaction in relation to their studies
Here is an extract taken from the findings of an international survey '2009 Students' Barometer', carried out in France by the Trendency Institute last February on a sampling of 12 648 engineering students in 88 schools. 220 CPE Lyon students took part in this survey which shows student level of satisfaction with regard to their expectations.

Double diplomas

Double diplomas: a springboard for your international career!

With appropriate language preparation, you have the possibility of obtaining two diplomas:

CPE Lyon engineer diploma and 1 of these diplomas issued by a partner university (in this case, tuition fees are paid only to CPE Lyon).

In Chemistry - Chemical Engineering

Diploma “Ingeniero Quimica industrial y Medio Ambiente” at the ETSII of Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, in Spain.

Duration: 18 months
Number of ECTS credits: 60 ECTS credits for the course + 30 ECTS credits for the end of course project
The end of course project takes place in an enterprise in Spain… or in the country of your choice, as approved by the ETSII.

Diploma « Diplom-Chemiker(in) Univ. » from Julius-Maximilians Universität Würzburg, in Germany.

Fields concerned: organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, materials, biochemistry.
Duration: 18 months.
German examination to be passed for admission to the course
Number of ECTS credits: 60 ECTS credits for the course + 30 ECTS credits for the end of course project
The end of course project must take place in tone of the university’s research laboratories

The programme organised with the university of Würzburg is funded by the Université Franco-Allemande. Students receive a grant of 4,250 euros for the period of the study (18 months).

In Electronics – Telecommunications - Computer science

Diploma “Ingeniero Automatica y Electronica Industrial” at the ETSII of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, in Spain

Duration: 18 months.
Number of ECTS credits: 60 ECTS credits for the course + 30 ECTS credits for the end of course project
The end of course project takes place in an enterprise in Spain… or in the country of your choice, as approved by the ETSII.

Double diplomas in Europe are also part of the Erasmus programme and so are funded by the Erasmus grant: approximately 130 euros per month for 3 to 12 months.

Masters of Science

In addition to the CPE Lyon engineer diploma, students at the school are also offered the opportunity of taking a “Master of Science” (MSc) at an English or American university, or a “PhD”, subject to taking and passing the English tests (tuition fees are paid only to CPE Lyon – you are exonerated from the cost of the Master wherever you take it):

In Chemistry - Chemical Engineering

All fields of chemistry and process engineering are open to you in the research groups of renowned university laboratories.

Practically all CPE Lyon’s partner American universities will accept you under very advantageous financial conditions for a “Masters of Science”, “Masters of Engineering” or ”PhD”:

Teaching Assistantship or Research Assistantship grants (between 1200 and 1800 USD).
Enrolment fees completely covered in the American university (as an indication one year will cost up to 35,000 USD).

Master in Technologies for Broadband Communications

MSc Space Technology and Satellite Communications

Year 5 of the CPE Lyon engineering course is merged with the first two years of “MSc” or “PhD”. The engineer diploma is obtained after at least 18 months in the university and at least 6 months conducting a research project in the laboratory.

CPE Lyon actively participates in several European networks and organisations:

European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTN):

Since 1996 Anthony SMITH, director of International Relations at CPE Lyon, has been the co-ordinator of the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTN), which is a network with 160 members in around thirty European countries that aims to promote chemistry education and assessment in Europe.

CHEMEPASS:

CPE Lyon co-ordinates a working group of 12 European higher education chemistry and process engineering institutions. This group developed CHEMEPASS, since 1987an institutional contract, Erasmus Charter for 2007-2013.

Erasmus placement programme:

A mobility contract was signed with the Institut Polytechnique de Lyon in 1995.

Leonardo da Vinci programme, Erasmus contract:

"English for Special Purposes : Chemistry",since 2003.

Programme TransAtlantic Science Student Exchange Program (TASSEP):

This programme has promoted student exchanges between Europe and North America since 2004.

Francophone course in Saint-Petersburg via the Institut Polytechnique de Lyon:

CPE Lyon participates in a project with three other schools in the Institut Polytechnique de Lyon (ECAM, ISARA, ITECH) on Francophone courses in Saint Petersburg.

In the framework of this project, after 3 or 4 years of being taught in French in Saint Petersburg Russian students come to CPE Lyon for 2 or 3 years to obtain an engineer diploma.

Réseau n+i:

It has around fifty French school of engineering members.

The objective is to attract high potential international students that have obtained a Bachelor in their home country to take an engineer diploma (Master) in 2 years (including a transitional semester).

Every year there are usually over 600 applicants. The Director of CPE Lyon, Gérard PIGNAULT, is a member of the network’s governing body.

Ecole Supérieure de Chimie Physique Electronique de Lyon - Year ICPI 1996

“I currently run an electricity company working in the building industry that I took over on 1 October 2006. Its turnover in 2007 was in the region of 950 k€ and it employs 15 people.

During my first 9 years of work, I had various experiences in large groups listed on the CAC 40. I therefore worked in management functions in informatics in banking (in Paris) and industrial (in Fos /s Mer) environments. Then the desire to start a business in the area where I was born (the Loire area) took hold! In 6 months and after going to EM Lyon to do a module on taking over a business, I found that rare thing: a small electricity company working in the building industry. In my position at the head of this small business, which I have for nearly 2 years been gradually structuring employing the methods of an engineer, I have the true contact with society that I was looking for.

My diploma saved me time and gave me credibility when arranging to take over the business (banks, labels, suppliers). Even if technically my diploma is not used much day to day, the spirit of synthesis and analysis that I developed during my studies has been essential. Another important point: human experiences, voluntary work and my placements contributed to shaping me as an entrepreneur.

For information, I also had the opportunity to take over an electricity business that came up through the CPE past students’ association!”

Year 2000, Chemistry - Chemical Engineering

“I graduated from CPE Lyon in 2000 in Chemistry - Process Engineering and continued my studies with a thesis on polymer synthesis at the University of Sussex in Brighton in England. At the end of my thesis, I was employed by DuPont Teijin Films at the R&D Centre in Middlesbrough in the north of England. For a little over 4 years I have been working and managing a team of three people working on research and development of polyester films for optical and electronic applications. In 2006, I had the opportunity to go and spend 8 months in Japan where I worked on a shared project with our research centre in Gifu, near Nagoya.

CPE’s role in my career has been decisive on two occasions. Firstly the year in industry I did with Rhodia, encouraged by the school and facilitated by its industrial contacts, enabled me to establish my career plan and gave me the maturity (relative!) that attracted my current employer. Next I was able to do my thesis abroad by means of an interview that CPE co-ordinated with Arkema.

The various stages along my career path now serve me particularly well in an international environment where significant experience in different settings – companies and countries - make it possible to understand the technical and human issues more easily.”
